Shocked by the unsanitary conditions he discovers, Manson works to improve matters and receives the support of Dr Philip Denny, a cynical semi-alcoholic who, Manson finds out in due course, took a post as an assistant doctor after having fallen from grace as a surgeon.

Since Manson has accused the incompetent surgeon of murder, he is vindictively reported to the Jj Medical Council for having worked with an American tuberculosis specialist, Richard Stillman, who does not have a medical degree, even though the patient had been successfully treated at his clinic.

According to the cover, this was adapted by Masterpiece Theatre and I can see why: It sounds very grim though. This book is one of the best books that I have read in my life and I have become a hard core fan of A J Cronin. I was frustrated by the major communication problems between them, and I wonder if a lot of their problems could have been avoided if they tried a little harder to share their feelings, etc.

The Citadel

Before long, it is evident that his patients have great faith in him as a doctor. The Citadel follows ciatdel life of Andrew Manson, a young and idealistic Scottish doctor, citadfl he naviga “Cronin’s distinguished achievement Finlay character, the hero of a series of stories that served as the basis for the long-running BBC television and radio series entitled Dr. But now I can go ahead and recommend this book to him. The nearby town of Aberalaw needs a physician, and Manson goes before the committee there as an applicant for the job.

But the heroe was unlicable to me, for he was unfair to his wife, captius, and overpedanting to monay. Leave a Reply Cancel reply Enter your comment here Posted on October 1, Cifadel 6, by Elizabeth.

A must read book! Preview — The Citadel by A. Help other people and stop thinking about herself! But Cronin wasn’t to know that in With all the crap that is handed to this poor guy throughout the book, I felt like having her die was just too much. And another book that should not be forgotten is The Physician by Noah Gordon, which is already in my TBR list for quite some time already.

Cronin also attacks the hospital system which saw the less well off condemned to be m in crumbling, ancient buildings, funded by penny collections and advertising displays, whilst those who could afford cronim opted for private clinics, usually unsuitable former houses that were badly converted and ill-equipped.

He marries a wonderful young teacher named Christine and they are very happy, not having much materially, but rich in love and plans for the future. View all 7 comments. Manson is gradually seduced by the idea of material success and resorts to the same stock remedies, pointless operations and endorsing commercial products which have no medical benefit as so many other doctors did.

The Citadel by A. J. Cronin

A wonderful cautionary tale. I used to live in Dumbarton which is the small Scottish town that Cronin lived in, so he was a bit of a legend when I was growing up. September 12,sec. She supports him through thick and thin, encourages him in his work and helps with his research into lung diseases.

It has been credited with laying the foundation in Great Britain for the introduction of the NHS a decade later. Cronin can take your breath away and make you eager for the ending and even after that you will be indulged for a while in the acts of a poor young doctor and if what he did was right or wrong!!! This fact will bring a lot of prestige, money and all kind of human ambition.

It is ghe to see him turn croinn this man into a cronln of a man who is obsessed with making more money, even if it means pandering to wealthier patients, giving patients medicine he knows cltadel work, or encouraging patients to get unnecessary surgeries.

The Citadel Summary –

Stillman’s treatment, that of pneumothorax involved collapsing an affected lung with nitrogenand was not universally accepted at the time. Based on Cronin’s own experiences as a physician, The Citadel boldly confronts traditional medical ethics, and has been noted as one of the inspirations for the formation of the National Health Service.

Wonderfully told, sometimes wordy, with great characters and lots of in and outs. Want to Read Currently Reading Read.

One can sympathise with his refusal to issue sick certificates to miners who are croni fit to work, with his run-in with the district nurse and her antiquated remedies which do more harm than good and his desire to overcome resistance to vaccination but when it comes to showing up another doctor for mis-diagnosis and to reviving m stillborn baby that others have given up on he comes across as rather sanctimonious.

As a result, Manson is not always tactful in dealing with people. The Citadel was published in the year Despite his lawyer’s gloomy prognosis, Manson forcefully justifies his actions during the hearing and is not struck off the medical register. Cronin drew on his experiences practising medicine in the coal mining communities of the South Wales Valleysas he had for The Stars Look Down two years earlier.

As Cronin states, The Citadel is semi-autobiographical but because it was written to convey a powerful message, which it has been argued contributed significantly to the thhe vision of the NHS, it has several flaws as a work of fiction.

In this book Cronin has a weakness towards tell don’t show, rather than letting characters emerge through their dialogue or actions and his use of Manson’s wife – really potentially an interesting figure in her own right – is wasteful.
